We went in on Friday for T.J's one month check up and they told us he was healthy, advanced and doing great! Friday evening we took my stepson to his mom's house and T.J. started crying like he always does in the car so I thought nothing of it. Once home we got him calmed down, but he wouldn't eat which was unusual but I just thought it was from being so upset.
At midnight my sister was changing him and she said I think he has a fever and so we checked and it was 100.3. I called his doctor and she said "Take him to the ER and once there they will do 3-4 tests. First, a blood test, then urine, then an x-ray of the lungs and, finally, if any of these shows an infection they will do a spinal tap." We packed T.J. up and 20 minutes after talking to the doctor we got him to the ER. The check-in nurse said, "I don't like the way he looks," so she took us right back. The doctor came in right away and confirmed the things the pediatrician had said about testing. They did the lung x-ray and then came in to draw blood and when they poked him he did not react at all. They couldn't get blood from his left arm so they went to the right and when they tried there the nurse said we need to bag him because he's not breathing. They bagged him then started CPR because his heart rate dropped below 40. Seeing CPR performed on your child is heart-wrenching. He coded three times, so they put in a breathing tube and the doctor called the children's hospital and they life-lined him there.
Once at the children's hospital they hooked him up to a breathing tube and IV's. There was more tube than baby. On Saturday he started having seizures that lasted an hour at a time no matter how much medicine they gave him. On Sunday they did an MRI of his brain and his brain was all dead except for maybe a quarter of an inch on the edges. They told us IF he lived he would not have any type of life.
On Monday I prayed God would give me a sign on what to do as T.J. was going downhill even on meds and our amazing nurse with tears streaming down her face (who didn't hear my prayer) told me it's ok to tell us to stop. You are not killing your child if you tell us to stop. I know God used her because deep down that was my thought. I decided I cannot keep him laying there like a vegetable so they unhooked everything and I got to hold my beautiful baby skin to skin until he went to be with Jesus. After unhooking the machines our little warrior lasted in his momma's arms for one half hour!
