I went into labour in my 40th week of pregnancy. After being in labour for 15 hours, my doctor ordered an emergency c-section. After my baby was born, he did not cry at all. Even whilst being given a bath, he was silent. The nurses brought him to me after 2 hours. I was asked to try feeding him, but he refused and kept grunting. I called one of the nurses and she immediately asked that my baby be sent to the NCIU.
My baby spent his first 2 weeks in the NICU. GBS was picked up 3 hours after he was born. I was not tested for it. He had to undergo a 2 week course of medication to clear the bacteria out of his system. He was on a respirator and a heart monitor. He had lines inserted on both of his legs, his arms, and on his head. The worst was not knowing whether he would make it or not. The doctors could not give us any information on his status and said that we would have to just pray for him.
He is now 2 and half years old with no trace of anything that had gone wrong with him at birth. When I hear of other children and how GBS has affected them, I am so thankful to God and the staff at the hospital where my baby was born. He is now a perfectly healthy little boy.
