After 60 hours of labor under the care of a midwife, an emergency c-section was required. My temperature suddenly increased to a very bad fever, and the baby's heart rate became very erratic, dropping off at times. When the baby was extracted from my body, both of our temperatures were 103.7. He had swallowed and inhaled enormous amounts of meconium and could hardly breathe and was taken to the NICU. Antibiotics were administered as part of procedure there. Thank heavens for that, because the Group B Strep was detected within 48 hours (and the proper antibiotic given). Because of the early administration of antibiotics, the baby turned around completely after 14 days in the NICU.
