I am Hayden's grandma. My daughter Shanna tested positive for GBS. We were told this was not serious as all she had to do was receive antibiotics thru an IV when she went into labor. Three days later she went into labor at 36 weeks. Hayden arrived perfectly. He weighed 5.8 lbs. Everything was good. He didn't eat very much at feedings and he slept a lot. After taking him for his two week checkup we were told just to wake him every two hours for feeding. He did gain weight. We were happy with that. For fifteen days he was a healthy baby, very aware for his age. Our world revolved around this beautiful, perfect baby -- God had made our family complete!!
On day sixteen I was at work when my sister let me know that Hayden was taken to the ER. When I got there my daughter told me he was turning blue and wasn't breathing right. We could not go in the room with him. Hours later we were let in there and we were told that Cook's Children's Hospital in Fort Worth was on their way by ambulance because the weather was too bad to fly -- we live about 2 hours from there. We were told to go home and pack our bags. The stay would be about one to two weeks. The whole time we were there in the ER we were never told there was a chance our baby might not make it -- not until Cook's finally arrived. Once they got there they started ECMO treatment -- shortly after we were told Hayden wasn't going to make it. At 7:38 pm our angel passed away because of GBS -- he had meningitis. The doctors said his whole body was full of infection. Reading his autopsy was horrible -- I just wonder if he was in pain those sixteen days he was here. Everyday I force myself out of bed. I miss him more and more everyday. Reading about it now I see how serious GBS can be. I just wonder if I would have read about this sooner, if Hayden would still be here.
