DARCY — UK
Born June 26, 2014

Late-onset

Mother's GBS Status:
Tested positive
Gestational Age: Full term
Age Harmed: 9 weeks
When I found out I was expecting my son Darcy I was thrilled but scared at the same time. I carried GBS with my other two previous pregnancies and had IV antibiotics during labour and both were healthy babies. My 2nd baby appeared unwell shortly after birth with cold-like symptoms, but was told she didn't need IV antibiotics. She then went on to be fine.

However, when I started seeing my consultant for Darcy I said how I felt that he should be given IV antibiotics at birth due to previous problems, but they refused and said as long as I had it during labour he would be fine. Soon came the day Darcy entered the world. I had IV antibiotics and he appeared well, until one day I took him to my doctor and said he wasn't right. He wasn't alert like he was. They claimed that I was overprotecting him and he was fine, but later on that same day Darcy deteriorated drastically.

I managed to get an ambulance medic to come out who claimed he was teething! Once we arrived at our local hospital one doctor looked at my baby boy and took him straight to resuscitation to start a lumber puncture. A short while after the doctor told me my son had an hour to live and he had contracted sepsis through GBS. So much more awareness needs to be raised.  Please make as much awareness as u can x
