We found out we got pregnant in July just 1 month after our son passed away at 21 weeks from a virus. Talya was our 5th pregnancy and we were very nervous.
My first prenatal appointment was in the month of August. At this appointment they saw I had GBS in my urine and I was put on antibiotics and was told that I would be given antibiotics when I go into labor.
I was only told by the doctors the harm GBS could cause my baby if my water broke, but I was never given any information on what GBS was.
My pregnancy wasn't like my other pregnancies. I had a low lying placenta and was put on weight restrictions. When I got into my third trimester things started to look up. My placenta had moved up and I was able to give birth vaginally.
I was about 37 weeks and had started losing my mucus plug so I called the doctor since I had never experienced this before. They asked me to come in to see a doctor. They verified that I was losing my mucus plug and everything was fine. They also asked if I had done the GBS test and they looked in my chart and said, "oh, you don't need to do it. You've already tested positive, You'll get antibiotics when you go into labor."
On April 8th I awoke to some bleeding and I went into the doctor. I saw a nurse practioner since the doctor I was to see was in a delivery. She checked me and had to push quite a bit to check my cervix and said that it was only brown blood so to go home as things were fine. I had some slight spotting but no blood clots.
On April 9th I woke up to more spotting and some clotting. I called the doctor and they had me go to labor and delivery. They monitored the baby and me for 3 hours and did an ultrasound and everything was fine. My bag of water was still intact and the ultrasound showed my placenta was fine--no ruptures. They did another internal exam and they again said that it was brown blood and they discharged me to home. I did my kick counts as I usually would and went to bed.
I woke up on April 10th to our baby not moving as she normally would. I was a bit worried but thought she would move around after breakfast. I ate and still nothing. I called the doctor and again they sent me to labor and delivery. My husband didn't work this day so I had him come to the doctor with me "just in case" something was wrong.
When I got to the hospital they had me get in a gown and proceeded to check for a heart beat with the doppler and couldn't find one. They then brought in an ultrasound machine to check for a heartbeat and we discovered our little girl had passed.
Our doctor decided she was going to induce us that day and had to break my water to start labor.
Our little girl, Talya Rose, was born a few hours later on April 10th. Shortly after my placenta was removed I started to shake uncontrollably and got very sick. I was freezing and had a very high temperature. They put me on antibiotics just in case.
The next day they did some more bloodwork on me and saw that I had a blood infection and that it was GBS in my blood. I had to stay at the hospital for 2 extra days getting antibiotics becuase the level of GBS in my system was high.
We ordered an autopsy to be performed because my husband and I wanted to know what caused our baby to pass away.
We received her autopsy results and found out she had GBS in her system. They also did an autopsy on the placenta and found the placenta was fine as well as the bag of water. All membranes were intact when my induction started.
It's hard to belive that one day she was moving and the next day she was gone. We strongly believe that it was GBS that took her life and we can only hope that one day their will be extra testing and hope that no one has to endure the pain that we've had to endure.
